Kente – In the small town of Bonwire

The West African region of the African continent cannot be left out from the African textile revolution. In the small town of Bonwire, in the Ashanti region of Ghana, Kente weaving is a well-known art of the people. The textile practice dates back to about 400 years ago. Legend has it that, it was inspired the brilliantly patterned spider web by “Ananse”, a popular trickster from West African lore. The Kente is worn by the King of the Ashanti Kingdom and adds a sense of royalty to whoever wears it. Ghana was the first West Africans to get in touch with the Ankara cloth. As such, it has played a pivotal role in promoting it alongside its Nigerian counterparts. It is fused with the African art, culture and fashion. Likewise, the traditional hand-woven kente cloth has inspired many of the colours and patterns of wax print cloth designs. The colours and symbols used in each print design on the wearer may symbolise their tribe, marriage, and social status. Many of the prints go as far as establishing a non-verbal communication between the attired and the people around them. Nothing beats hand woven fabrics. They are made with love from the alluring motherland with designs that speaks volumes to illustrate the rich African culture. Today, African textiles are widely known and appreciated for their elaborate prints, messages and colour.
